Broadband Entertainment Goes Abroad

A Chinese version of Broadband Entertainment has hit the markets and is selling fast. At a Beijing IT conference in October 2005, the book was released by Shanda Interactive and they sold all 500 copies that they took to the show.

Part of the appeal of the 29 RMB ($3.38) book was that it had a 200 RMB ($24.22) coupon off of Shanda's EZ Station, which is an entertainment server. Shanda will release the EZ Station and the EZ Mini , a portable version, to deliver online audio, video, gaming, and literature. The EZ products are truly remarkable devices that are part of a system to deliver entertainment to online customers.

Shanda is leading the way in China by delivering content from over 48 content service providers, likeUniversal Music. Since China has about a 10% penetration rate for cable television and ~0% for satellite (US has about 90% of the population paying for a video service), Shanda hopes to capitalize on the wide open entertainment market. Instead of using cable or satellite to deliver content, they'll use the Internet.

China's virgin markets are letting entrepreneurs like Shanda, China's largest online gaming company, jump into area of entertainment that are saturated in America. In the US, online startups like Akimbo have to compete against the incumbent cable and satellite providers and don't have a chance of delivering the same amount of content and service and make a profit. China may leapfrog the US in delivering online entertainment content to the masses.

Here's the cover of the book:. The first endorsement is from Shanda's CEO, Chen Tian Qiao. The quote says, "This is the first endorsement of a book by Shanda's CEO. Read about the future that the wealthiest man in China shares." Shanda's CEO was considered the wealthiest man in China at age 32 when Shanda's stock (SNDA on NASDAQ) was at around $40/share. He wrote a full page prelude and his picture is in the book as well.

The second endorsement is from the CEO of a leading IT magazine, China PC World. Below my name are the two translators of the book, Jin Fan and Kong Yan. I mainly worked with Jin Fan in getting the book published. Jin Fan's English is very good and he was very helpful in getting the book out.

Shantou Publishing used a cover flap like I did on the English version. Below my picture is a translation of my BIO.

Here's a pictue of the back cover of the book with the back flap open. The four endorsers are China's Google President, the President of a prestigious business college in China, the CEO of IT Critic Magazine, and the founder of DONEWS. Besides the front cover of my book, the back cover flap has the coupon for 200 Yuan off the EZ Station product.

Here's a Saturday morning picture of me, unshaven with my glasses, after I saw the beautiful blue book for the first time. Not the best picture of me, but it's a good one of the book.

Chinese Guests:

Here's a special audio announcement to all of the people in China who helped with the book.
