Digital Terrestrial Television

Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) is the technical term for digital, over-the-air broadcasts of television. Traditional NTSC signals were analog signals that delivered one channel of conventional definition television. DTT delivers 19 Mbps with 8-VSB (8 bit Vestigial Side Band) in the same 6 MHz band that NTSC channels have been using for decades. DTT has also bee specified to deliver 38 Mbps with 16-VSB, but this format is not commonly used.

DTT was designed to deliver HDTV compressed with MPEG-2 to 19 Mbps. Instead of broadcasting only one HDTV channel, many television stations multicast several stations in SDTV or EDTV.
